Gold-Digger’s Daughter
About the Book
The story follows an ambitious woman – a somewhat spoiled but smart and well connected ‘rich daddy’s girl’ – who gets involved with a clandestine group tasked with bootstrapping the Russian semiconductor industry. To begin with, her involvement with the project is fun and exciting. And very profitable. She was a businesswoman who knew when she had a good deal going. And Grigory – her recruiter – was a very interesting man… But then she discovers that she is working for Russian deep state: big men playing big games with big money. She fears that the things that she knows may be a problem for some of them — and that these are the kind of people who have few scruples about how potentially embarrassing liabilities who may be ‘bad for business’ are addressed. So she knows that she must get out… But how does one resign from such an entanglement?
At its heart, Gold-Digger’s Daughter is about more than wealth or status. It is about the emotional cost of family dynamics, the drive to break free from limiting labels, and the courage it takes to define one’s own destiny. The narrative blends sharp observation with deep humanity, giving readers both a compelling story and a mirror through which they can reflect on their own choices and values.
Background
The global supply chain for semiconductors is falling apart. This has got to be perceived as a strategic threat by many countries – including the US (see FA Confidential and Between the Dragons). However, currently the threat is probably most acutely felt by Russia – a country that sees itself as a superpower. It has no credible domestic supply of advanced chips, and following the start of the Ukrainian War, it has been subjected to all kinds of sanctions. So, Russia relies either on chips smuggled in (through all kinds of inventive back doors), or on chips supplied by China (itself subject to sanctions and restrictions). And yet, semiconductor microchips and ICs are essential in modern warfare. So, it is not hard to imagine that someone like Putin would find this situation unacceptable – maybe even humiliating. It is not hard to imagine that Putin would order the development of domestic chip manufacturing. And yet, as an engineer I find it hard to believe that Russia will soon manufacture its own advanced chips. There is too much infrastructure required, Russia has been behind for too many years, and the West has a choke-hold on key equipment. Nevertheless, Russia must be trying…
All this has got to be a great backdrop for a good drama story. A few interesting characters intertwined with the tension of real events, and…
