Overview of "The Nerd and the Honeytrap" by Riko Radojcic
Lonely American engineer + a beautiful woman + North Korea = an explosive yo-yo
About the Book
This is a fictional tale that follows Norbert, a lonely engineering nerd, who falls for Choon-hee, a captivating woman who appears to be the answer to his dreams. But then he is abducted and he discovers that she is not who she claimed to be, but a North Korean agent. Torn between anger and lingering love, Norbert is slowly turned, and eventually lured to North Korea. There he finds true love, but is also ordered to work on a weapons project. Eventually he realizes that he will never belong there, and the two of them hatch a complex and dangerous plot to escape from the Hermit Kingdom…
This story explores the depths of human connection, vulnerability, and resilience against an intricate backdrop of espionage and high-stakes manipulation. A reminder that in love and war, nothing is ever what it seems to be…
Background
The global game to secure microchip supply chain independence, or even to achieve semiconductor technology supremacy, has been playing out for a decade or so. To me, it is clear that with a technology that has been characterized by rapid evolution punctuated by relatively frequent paradigm shifts, this game should really be more about the extraordinary people who turn the seemingly impossible technology into ubiquitous reality, than about access to some special rocks, or acquisition of advanced manufacturing equipment. It is what these people – the ‘nerds’ – have in their heads that really counts. Other things are transitory. In geopolitical terms, these people should be treated like NATIONAL SECURITY ASSETS!
And yet, the reality in popular media – outside the Tony Starks of the Marvel Universe – is that this kind of people are typically presented like mumbling nerds-in-hoodies; a bit awkward, and somewhat amusing in their interactions with the real world. As in, for example, the Big Bang Theory franchise.
Another thing that is often in the news is how North Korea had demonstrated some new weapon or other – including missiles, nukes, drones… This is amazing since (a) North Korea is often portrayed as being on brink of starvation, and (b) it has been pretty isolated since the Korean War. Since you cannot just go to your local grocery store to buy a handful of specialty chips, it is clear that North Korea has established and operated a supply chain that navigates around the American and UN sanctions. Knowing how semiconductor industry works and how much expertise is required just to purchase chips or systems for weapon grade electronics, I believe that setting up such a supply chain must have taken decades, and that it is by now baked into the overall global network.
So, I thought that combining these two trains of thought might make for a great drama story. Something about an extreme ‘Nerd’, alienated from the mainstream American society, who is lured by a beautiful ‘Honeytrap’. Something about North Koreans abducting an engineer in order to get access to some specialty technical knowledge… And then the story took on a life of its own.
